Online Gambling in the United States

The online lottery market is currently a small but growing segment of the overall gambling market. The global lottery market has shown strong performance so far and should continue to do so over the next few years. In the United States, the legalization of online lotteries is a relatively new endeavor. However, with the availability of high speed internet, the outlook is optimistic. There are a few states that have already legalized this form of gaming. These include Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, Illinois, and Pennsylvania.

Each state operates its own lottery system, but some jurisdictions run multi-state games. For example, the Kentucky Lottery offers online games. Another is the Virginia Lottery. Similarly, the New Jersey Lottery offers Powerball and Mega Millions. The Virginia Lottery also provides players with the chance to play local and multi-state games.

Currently, there are 48 jurisdictions operating lottery systems in the U.S. The states that do not offer state-wide lottery are Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, and Utah.

Many of the states that operate lotteries have a de facto national lottery. The biggest of these is Powerball, which is available in virtually all jurisdictions. Some of the other popular lottery games are the Florida Lottery Pick 3, which has a prize range of $25 to $50,000, and the Bonus Match 5 game, which has a top prize of $50,000.

Other state-wide lottery games that exist in the United States include the California State Lottery, the Idaho Lottery, and the Nevada Lottery. A handful of other states have also legalized the online sale of lottery tickets.

Michigan is one of the most successful state-run lotteries in the United States. With weekly sales topping $8 million in less than 18 months, the retail lottery continues to set records. Moreover, the Michigan Lottery has introduced electronic scratch-offs that can be played online.

Wisconsin is another state that has a robust lottery offering. In addition to its local game selections, the Wisconsin Lottery features state-based and draw games. Additionally, the lottery has developed several in-house games for its residents. It is a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association, which offers players an additional choice of in-house games.

The New Hampshire Lottery began operations in 1964, and offers Mega Millions and Powerball. In 2013, the Wyoming lottery started the WyoLotto game. Likewise, the Ohio Lottery launched its in-house games in 2006. Lastly, the Oklahoma Lottery started in 2005, and offers in-house games.

The Connecticut Lottery is one of the oldest organizations in the United States. It is also a charter member of the Multi-State Lottery association. Since its inception, the organization has contributed close to $1 billion to the education of the local community.

New Mexico has a lottery system that features instant win games. One of its main attractions is the “Connected Wearables” which allow users to engage in the gaming experience in a very immersive fashion. Also, the lottery operates an information center, called Creative Services, to promote and inform the public about the Lottery’s products.
